Nebraska State FFA Livestock Management

Contest Overview

The livestock management contest is a true team competition where up to six individuals work together to identify basic management equipment, apply basic animal production and management principles, and solve basic animal management problems. Each station is species-specific and designed to test the contestant's overall knowledge of that particular industry and associated management concepts.

When registering your team, you MUST register for one of the following three specific contest sections. A maximum of 14 teams may be accommodated during each go-round.

Recent Changes to the Contest

The contest format and structure is the same as for past years.

State Rules and Format

  • A livestock management team will consist of 4-6 individuals who will work together as a team to complete all questions, activities, or problems associated with the various stations.
  • The contest will consist of six separate species-specific stations including Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Horse, Poultry, Sheep, and Swine. All teams are required to complete all stations.
  • Each station is worth 100 points; 600 points total.
  • At each station, an attempt will be made to cover aspects of management related to that species from applied, industry, skill, and scientific perspectives.
  • Each station will likely provide a combination of written questions and hands-on skills or expertise that must be demonstrated.
  • The majority of this contest will be conducted in the livestock arena (sand/dirt), and most stations will involve some direct work with livestock. Students should dress appropriately.
  • Supplementary notes/materials are NOT allowed and may result in the disqualification of your team from competition.
  • Use of cell phones and other electronic communication devices is NOT allowed during the competition and may result in the disqualification of your team from competition.

Tiebreaker

  • The superintendent within each species will designate a specific set of questions that will be used as the tie-breaker for the particular species.
  • The overall ranking is based upon the total of all scores across all six stations.
  • Overall tie-breaker:  more desirable average rank across all six stations.
